If you have a group of 15 or more people at your community group, craft or sewing group in the Gold Coast or the Northern Rivers area from Tweed Heads down to Ballina, why not take advantage of a great free session on the Tribal Textiles of Vietnam at one of your gatherings.
Just name your day and Narelle will be happy to attend your next gathering and share her collection and knowledge with your group. These presentations are of great interest to women’s groups that have an interest in sewing, crafts, embroidery and other cultures.
With over 100 pieces of embroidery, traditional costumes and photographs this hands-on fun and informative 1 hour presentation will transport you to the mountain villages of Vietnam through a kaleidoscope of colour and a fascinating insight into the textiles, traditions and costumes of the Hmong & Dao people.
From clan to clan and village to village the style and colour of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups showcase a vibrant and fascinating culture of textile traditions. Two of the largest and most diverse of these groups are that of the Hmong and Dao people. From the explosive colour of the Flower Hmong skirts and jackets to the richly embroidered costumes of the Red Dao, each has adopted a unique costume and identity. Traditional clothing style continues to be worn by women throughout the region and in some areas it grows more elaborate with time as they struggle to retain their identity in modern society.
As an experienced speaker and presenter at craft shows, charity events and community group meetings, your presenter, Narelle Grudgfield has been collecting costumes and travelling to the remote tribal areas of South East Asia for over 15 years. Narelle spent around 7 years as volunteer director of a small local based charity in Cambodia where she developed an association with a number of women’s charity groups and local craft cooperatives and developed a passion for the textile traditions and craft of the region. In 2008 Narelle began running small group tours to the region to allow others to experience the fascinating and colourful costumes and embroideries to be found and continues to add new pieces to her collection. She is currently writing a book on the Tribal Textile of South East Asia.
