Many of the hangers for sale are made of smoked bamboo. Smoking bamboo is a very old technique that helps protect bamboo from insects while darkening the material. Artisans place the bamboo products in a wood burning oven for around 10 ten hours. Alternatively, bamboo pieces can be placed in an old oil drum on a metal grill above a smoke-producing fuel that includes rice and coconut husks, wood and cow dung. At the same time that the smoke is blackening the product, acid is used to impregnate the walls of the bamboo, creating a natural barrier against insects. While this is a relatively simple process, artisans must pay close and careful attention to the density of the smoke in order to achieve the correct colour.
Note that as all products are hand made there may be slight imperfections on the finished product.
