Laos Projects

The humanitarian environment in Laos differs from that of countries like Cambodia in that it is tightly regulated by Government service organisations. This limits the availability of volunteer placements through independent organisations. Most volunteeing positions are only available through formal humanitarian organisations like AusAid.

However there are a number of projects which we strongly recommend that you contact before your trip to Laos to see how you can assist whilst you are visiting the country. This may be through donations of cash or supplies, or in some cases you may be able to donate some of your time - depending on the nature of the organisation.  The publication Stay Another Day Laos provides links and information on a number of registered NGO projects in Laos.

Some worthwhile projects to support while you are in Laos include:

  • Laos Kids  - supports the Luang Praband Government Orphanage
  • Big Brother Mouse - publishes and promotes Lao childrens books and education
  • Houey Hong Centre - vocational training centre for women
  • Ok Pop Tok - supports many rural villages and provides a weaving training centre
  • TAEC - Traditional Arts & Ethnic Centre - A must for every visitor to Lunag Prabang
